Whitewater Challenge

Looking for a great fun filled week of river trips, kayaking, more river trips and even more kayaking?

Are you 13 or older and have completed the 8th grade?

Then the Whitewater Challenge program is for you. You’ll leave Woodruff Sunday evening, during the opening campfire and spend the week at our outfitter’s outpost camp near the Nantahala River in North Carolina. Housing will be in cabins at the outpost.

Activities during this week-long adventure typically include rafting, kayaking and canoeing on rivers in Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina including the Toccoa, Little Tennessee, Ocoee, Nantahala and Tuskeegee Rivers.

Other activities will include kayak instruction, rafting, capsizing, stroke and paddle work, reading rivers, canoe handling and paddling skills, etc.

    • Finger Lake - Canoe & Kayak Instruction, Gate Test, Flip Drills
    • Finger Lake - Roll Practice and Paddling Techniques
  • Wednesday
    • Section II Tuckaseegee River – In Inflatable Canoes
    • Explore train wreck from the movie “The Fugitive”
    • Section V Tuckaseegee River – In Inflatable Canoes, Devils Dip
    • Kayaking Gear Class
  • Thursday
    • Nantahala River Trip (Raft Guide Olympics)
      • Surfing Nantahala Falls
      • Eddy Hopping Game
      • Throw Rope Practice
      • Z-Drag Demonstration
  • Friday
    • Transport to the Ocoee Base Camp
    • Whitewater Rafting on the Middle Ocoee
    • Travel back to Woodruff


All this for an added fee of only $50 (youth) beyond your base camp fee. 

Equipment List

For WWC Base Camp:
Note: Bring the base camp items packed separately in small duffel.

  • River shoes (old tennis shoes, water shoes or sandals. No Crocs.) – must have heel straps.
  • Long sleeve, synthetic (non-cotton) shirt. (Mountain rivers are cold!)
  • Bathing suits
  • Towels
  • Hat
  • Sun glasses, with glasses strap
  • Sun block
  • Lip balm
  • Water bottle
  • Sleeping bag
  • Personal toiletries
  • 3 Changes of clothes and clothes/shoes for around camp
  • Rain gea
  • Flashlight
  • Small trunk/lockbox (you might consider this if you have lots of valuables, maybe share with a friend)

For Base Camp @ Woodruff:

  • Leave Scout uniform with Troop


All Whitewater Challenge Participants must have a valid Annual Health and Medical Record Form (parts A, B & C) and MUST meet the High Adventure height/weight requirements.

Whitewater Express Waiver forms (WWE) are required for this “off camp” activity.
